Recreational Cannabis Massachusetts isn’t just a thriving industry; it’s a pillar of our economy and a hard-won personal liberty that is now under a coordinated, deceptive attack.
If you tuned into WCVB Channel 5’s CityLine on January 12th, you witnessed a masterclass in gaslighting. Wendy Wakeman, spokesperson for the Coalition for a Healthy Massachusetts, spent her airtime painting a picture of “reckless” consumers and “kid-appealing” products. It was a narrative so detached from the reality of Recreational Cannabis Massachusetts that it felt more like a PR junket than an investigative news report. Wakeman barely touched on the mounting allegations of ballot signature fraud, instead choosing to throw her own “paid” signature gatherers under the bus—the very people she hired to do the job.
As we approach the Semiquincentennial—a word that’s almost as difficult to say as it is for the “Coalition” to tell the truth—the irony is thick. While we prepare to celebrate 250 years of independence, a small group is attempting to strip away the personal freedoms of millions. If they think they can sneak a prohibitionist agenda past us using deceptive tactics, they’ve forgotten which state they’re in. This is the Commonwealth; we don’t take kindly to being misled about the future of Recreational Cannabis in Massachusetts.
The Secretary of State has already certified over 78,000 signatures for this initiative—signatures currently under fire. Attorney Adam Fine of Vicente LLP put it bluntly: “Based on multiple sworn affidavits and consistent accounts from voters across several communities, it became clear that this was not an isolated incident, but a pattern of deceptive and misleading signature-gathering practices.” Make no mistake: if this reaches the ballot—and it looks like it will—we must show up in record numbers to push back, or we lose everything.
$1.65 Billion in Annual Sales: A new record set for Recreational Cannabis Massachusetts in 2025. This entire economy would vanish.
Nearly $2 Billion Collected: Total state and local revenue generated since sales began in late 2018.
$289 Million in State Tax Revenue: Generated in fiscal year 2025 alone. These funds fuel schools, social equity, and public infrastructure.
30,000+ Jobs at Risk: Local families whose livelihoods depend on the Recreational Cannabis Massachusetts space would be left out in the cold.
ZERO Plants for Home Grow: Their bill doesn’t just close stores; it makes your private, legal home garden a crime again.
Wakeman alluded that products are “geared toward children.” It’s a tired script that ignores the strictest packaging laws around. While Massachusetts allows for branding, the rules for Recreational Cannabis in Massachusetts are fierce:
Child-Resistant & Opaque: All products must be in certified child-proof, opaque containers.
No “Candy” Clones: The law strictly prohibits cartoons or any branding that resembles existing snacks.
The Universal Symbol: Every package bears the red universal THC symbol and “Keep Out of Reach” warnings.
If Wendy wants to find products that actually look like candy and have zero age verification, she should look at the illicit market—the very market her bill would revitalize on every street corner.
Calling consumers “reckless” is an insult to the 46.3 million transactions that happened safely last year.
The Safety Gap: 2024 data shows alcohol was involved in roughly 80% of OUI arrests, while cannabis was linked to only 12%.
The Hypocrisy: The “Coalition” targets the regulated market of Recreational Cannabis Massachusetts while ignoring that it operates with more daily oversight than almost any other retail sector in the state.
In this historic year of 2026, these prohibitionists are attempting to override the will of the voters. Attorney Adam Fine rightly noted, “Voters deserve honesty when they are asked to participate in the ballot process.” We haven’t seen much of that from Wendy or the station that gave her a free pass.
They are banking on us being too “reckless” to vote. They are wrong. If this question becomes official, we must organize and push back hard. We are the workers, taxpayers, and voters of this Commonwealth.
The Bottom Line: Showing up wins the battle. When November comes, we push back—and we push back hard for Recreational Cannabis Massachusetts.
